The first international ATHENA MIBS AI & Simulation 2026 training programme took place in Athens from 25 to 28 June 2026, bringing together surgical anatomy, minimally invasive and robotic breast surgery, breast reconstruction, artificial intelligence and advanced simulation technologies.

The programme included theoretical sessions and practical training using cadaveric specimens. It covered breast anatomy and physiology, endoscopic and robotic surgery, reconstruction following minimally invasive mastectomy, applications of artificial intelligence and simulation-based surgical education.
A total of 41 surgeons from 11 countries across three continents took part in the programme.

The event brought together Greek and international surgeons specialising in minimally invasive breast surgery. It was held one year after the first application of robotic breast surgery in Greece, reflecting the development of the field and the expansion of training in advanced surgical techniques.
The programme was organised by the Laboratory of Anatomy, Advanced Anatomical Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Experimental Surgical Research of the Department of Nursing at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Scientific direction was provided by Professor Theodoros Mariolis-Sapsakos, Assistant Professor Ioannis Papapanagiotou and Scientific Associate Vasilios Kalles.
ATHENA MIBS 2026 was held under the auspices of NKUA, with Rector Professor Gerasimos Siassos serving as honorary president.
The programme also involved ISLE Academy, which provided facilities and robotic systems for the practical training, alongside participating academic institutions and companies.
The organisers said the programme aimed to provide international training in emerging approaches to breast surgery and to support the integration of robotic systems, artificial intelligence and simulation into surgical education.
