The Canal Salat Health Centre in Ciutadella is expanding its range of services with new haemodialysis facilities for patients with kidney disease in the western part of Menorca (Spain).
The new facilities, located on the ground floor of the centre, were visited this morning by Manuel Yebra, manager of the Menorca Health Area; Dr Oleo, Primary Care Coordinator; Ramon Sampol, Mayor of Ciutadella; and Coloma Marquès, President of ALCER Menorca.
The new facilities represent a significant improvement on the service previously provided at the Salus Clinic. They offer a larger, brighter and more comfortable environment, comprising a reception and control desk; a dialysis room equipped with eight active monitors – four beds and four treatment chairs – and two additional monitors in reserve; a changing room with lockers and an accessible toilet; a room for equipment and nursing staff; a consultation room for nephrology appointments; staff toilets and changing facilities; and a dedicated waste-disposal area.
Particular attention has been paid to the new water treatment plant, located in an adjacent building. It features a double reverse-osmosis system that ensures a supply of ultrapure, high-quality water, providing the highest possible level of safety for patients receiving renal replacement therapy.
The new dialysis unit of the CS Canal Salat occupies the space of the old meeting room and two consultations, which have been moved to the first floor, where four consultations have been enabled, an office for the social worker and new toilets for users.
The facilities operate as a satellite unit, so they depend on the Dialysis Service of the Mateu Orfila General Hospital, although it has its own team of staff. In addition to two nurses and a nursing assistant, with the transfer of the service to the Canal Salat Health Centre, a nephrologist is joining the team, who will be present at all morning and evening dialysis shifts that will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which will improve the service received by the fourteen patients who currently require this renal therapy, who need around two thousand sessions a year.
The presence of the nephrologist in the dialysis unit of the Canal Salat Health Centre will also allow, in the short term, to increase nephrology consultations for patients in Ciutadella. Specifically, it is expected that consultations can be opened one day a week; it should be taken into account that currently the Mateu Orfila specialists travel to Canal Salat twice a month. This improvement in healthcare will allow appointments to be made more quickly and waiting lists for this specialty to be reduced in the municipality.
