A Memorandum of Cooperation signed by Papageorgiou General Hospital and Athens LifeTech Park on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the Hospital opens up new opportunities for clinical studies and biomedical research in Greece.
The partnership builds on the Hospital’s extensive experience in clinical research and Athens LifeTech Park’s specialised life sciences expertise and capabilities. It establishes a common framework for launching new research projects and attracting clinical research initiatives to Greece.
Particular emphasis will be placed on bioequivalence and clinical studies, as well as on supporting the early development of new pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products.
The aim is to bring clinical practice into closer collaboration with biotechnology and bioanalytical expertise, while strengthening Greece’s position in international clinical and biomedical research.
Papageorgiou General Hospital has extensive experience in clinical research and strong ties with the academic and research community, including through its collaboration with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Hospital’s Clinical Research Unit will play a central role in the partnership. The Unit is active in Phase I clinical trials, as well as bioequivalence and therapeutic equivalence studies.
Athens LifeTech Park, meanwhile, is Greece’s first biotechnology park, offering modern laboratory infrastructure and specialised life sciences expertise. It supports a broad range of research and development activities, from bioanalysis and pharmacokinetics to early-stage clinical development.
The partnership establishes an integrated framework linking laboratory-based and biotechnology research with clinical practice. By combining the Hospital’s clinical experience with Athens LifeTech Park’s expertise in bioanalysis, pharmacokinetics and research, the two organisations aim to support studies that meet high scientific and quality standards. The collaboration could also help attract additional research and clinical projects to Greece.
Michalis Karaviotis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Papageorgiou General Hospital, stated: “The partnership with Athens LifeTech Park significantly strengthens the Hospital’s capabilities in clinical research, particularly in bioequivalence and clinical studies. By combining our team’s clinical experience and scientific knowledge with ALTP’s expertise and capabilities, we are creating the conditions for more studies and new collaborations in Greece and abroad. Our goal is to strengthen the Clinical Research Unit and enhance Papageorgiou’s contribution to research, helping generate new knowledge and develop better treatment options for patients.”
Eleni Pentafragka, CEO of Athens LifeTech Park, commented: “With the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation with Papageorgiou General Hospital, we aim to strengthen clinical research and contribute to faster drug development, with patients at the centre of everything we do. Innovation is the vehicle that drives us forward, but partnerships are at the heart of what we are building in Spata. We believe that real progress happens when the knowledge, experience and capabilities of different organisations come together around a shared goal. Today’s agreement reflects that belief and opens up new prospects for research in Greece.”
