Nicosia General Hospital has announced two important developments in cardiac electrophysiology and implantable cardiac devices, both carried out for the first time in Cyprus.
First implantation of an Abbott AVEIR leadless pacemaker
In 2023, Nicosia General Hospital pioneered the launch of the Medtronic MICRA leadless pacemaker implantation programme, which is now the most experienced programme of its kind in Cyprus. Building on this experience, the hospital’s specialised cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) team performed the first implantation of the Abbott AVEIR system in Cyprus, further expanding the treatment options available to patients requiring cardiac pacing.
Leadless pacemakers represent a significant development in modern cardiology, as they do not require traditional leads or a subcutaneous pacemaker pocket, thereby reducing some of the complications associated with conventional pacemakers.
First implantation of a Biotronik DX-CRT system in Cyprus
At the same time, Nicosia General Hospital carried out the first implantation of the Biotronik DX-CRT system in Cyprus, an innovative cardiac resynchronisation technology for the treatment of advanced heart failure.
In selected patients, the system can provide the functionality of a three-lead system using only two leads. This can reduce the number of leads required and, consequently, some of the potential complications associated with the implantation of multiple leads.
The two procedures demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to continuously upgrading healthcare services, introducing modern and innovative technologies into the Cypriot healthcare system in a timely manner, and strengthening its role as a reference centre for implantable cardiac devices.
The Interventional Electrophysiology and Implantable Electronic Cardiac Devices team at Nicosia General Hospital performs more than 450 cardiac device implantations each year, maintaining a very low complication rate comparable to that of specialised tertiary centres abroad.
The team has also pioneered the introduction of new and innovative technologies in the field of cardiac implantable devices in Cyprus. Results and data from its work are regularly presented at international scientific conferences, highlighting the level of specialised care provided.
