Bulgaria has the potential to become a regional center for innovative medicine, both by implementing advanced medical technologies and by contributing to their further development.
One of the government’s key priorities is to improve the conditions that currently lead many Bulgarians to seek medical treatment abroad. Prime Minister Rumen Radev made the remarks during a meeting at the government headquarters with representatives of the health innovation and medical technology sector. Health Minister Katya Ivkova also attended the meeting.
The discussion focused on the possibility of establishing a Center of Excellence for Robotic-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery, which would position Bulgaria at the forefront of the latest, minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
Bulgaria currently has no Center of Excellence dedicated to robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery. Its establishment would provide access to state-of-the-art robotic surgical systems while creating opportunities to train and employ highly qualified medical professionals.
The meeting also explored the possibility of establishing a national reference center for radiosurgery, offering highly specialized, non-invasive treatment for conditions such as neurosurgical cancers, similar to centers already operating in a number of countries.
Another topic on the agenda was improving access to insulin pump therapy for children with diabetes, with the aim of expanding access to advanced treatment options for young patients.
