Vienna-based healthtech scale-up XUND has partnered with AOK NordWest to expand digital healthcare services in Germany. The health insurer is integrating XUND’s Symptom Check directly into its NAVIDA app, giving around 2.97 million AOK NordWest members access to a medically validated initial assessment of health complaints at any time and from anywhere.
Based on structured information about a user’s symptoms, the technology analyzes their profile and provides recommendations for the next steps.
As a Class IIa medical device, XUND’s certified tool is designed to strengthen patient autonomy and provide a trusted digital point of contact directly on the smartphone.
Germany’s healthcare system continues to face pressure from staff shortages, long waiting times and overcrowded emergency departments. At the same time, more people are turning to the internet for quick answers to health questions, where they can encounter misinformation.
XUND’s Symptom Check addresses this gap by providing a validated digital initial assessment and directing patients to the most appropriate level of care, such as a general practitioner, pharmacy, telemedicine service or emergency department. This can help prevent unnecessary medical visits and conserve resources across the healthcare system.
XUND’s Symptom Check is certified as a Class IIa medical device under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR). This distinguishes it from unregulated AI services and conventional internet search engines. Its clinical validation is designed to ensure that data processing and resulting recommendations meet high quality and safety standards.
XUND also says its IT infrastructure complies with ISO 27001 for information security and the German C5 security framework. Through its integration with the NAVIDA app, medical inputs are processed in pseudonymized form, meaning XUND cannot directly identify individual insured members from the data.
The partnership with AOK NordWest, one of Germany’s largest statutory health insurers, significantly expands access to XUND’s Symptom Check in the German market.
We are proud to partner with an innovation leader such as AOK NordWest and make our technology available to nearly three million insured members. For XUND, this partnership is a decisive step toward actively shaping Germany’s transition to a digitally focused healthcare system.

Tom Ackermann, CEO of AOK NordWest, said: “Modern health insurance means being there where our insured members need us — and increasingly, that means the smartphone. With the new Symptom Check in our NAVIDA app, we are creating a digital service that provides fast support for health complaints.”
Founded in Vienna in 2018, healthtech scale-up XUND specializes in software as a medical device (SaMD), enabling digital healthcare interactions from prevention through diagnosis.
