Regional partners in the Dutch region of Twente are investing more than €3 million to advance the Hospital of the Future initiative, bringing together healthcare providers, researchers and technology companies to improve healthcare delivery.
The initiative will see more patients monitored remotely from home through digital technologies, reducing unnecessary hospital visits and allowing hospitals to focus on specialist care.
The initiative aims to address growing pressure on healthcare systems caused by rising demand for services and persistent workforce shortages by integrating medical technology, digital health solutions and new models of care.
Instead of travelling to hospital for routine appointments, patients will increasingly receive care in their own homes or in community healthcare settings, supported by digital monitoring and connected technologies. Hospital visits will be reserved primarily for specialist treatment and complex care.

The Hospital of the Future is an initiative of the University of Twente (UT), Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST), FME and Twente Board Development, working together with regional, national and international partners.
Knowledge institutions, healthcare organisations and companies collaborate on innovative healthcare concepts and medical technologies. Twente aims to achieve a tenfold increase in healthcare productivity by 2050 through the use of medical technology. This will help meet the growing demand for care despite increasing staff shortages, while maintaining high-quality, accessible healthcare.
