Portugal-based diagnostics and biotechnology company biosurfit has joined a European consortium selected under the EU4Health programme to accelerate the development of rapid point-of-care antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), a technology aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance and improving clinical decision-making.
The consortium brings together European industrial, scientific and clinical partners to develop clinically validated, regulatory-ready AST solutions that can be used closer to the point of care.
According to the company, biosurfit will contribute its expertise in point-of-care diagnostics, with the project being led by its Research & Clinical and Engineering teams. The company’s role will focus on bridging scientific research, clinical relevance and technology execution.
The initiative seeks to enable rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing during patient care, helping healthcare professionals identify the most effective antibiotics more quickly. The approach is expected to support more targeted antibiotic use, improve patient outcomes and help address the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
biosurfit said its participation reflects the company’s scientific, technological and manufacturing capabilities, as well as its experience in translating diagnostic innovations into clinically applicable solutions.
The company added that the project aims to deliver robust, regulatory-compliant point-of-care AST technology with the potential to improve the management of common bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, while reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.
